Definition of hortatory text

Hortatory exposition text is a type of text that is used to convince or encourage readers or listeners to do something or take a certain action. 


Hortatory exposition text structure :

1. Introduction

Introduction or thesis is the initial explanation and opinion of the writer regarding the topic he chooses.

2. Arguments

Arguments are the reasons written by the writer to support the points of the argument so that it looks clear and strong.

3. Recommendation

Recommendation is the conclusion section that contains advice for the reader or a statement about how it should or should not be.


Communicative Purpose:

Hortatory Text: Aims to convince the reader or listener to follow a certain opinion or action.

Argumentative Text: Aims to present arguments and evidence to support an opinion or position.


Text Structure:

Hortatory Text: Usually begins with a statement of opinion or idea followed by supporting arguments, followed by a call or suggestion to action.

Argumentative Text: Usually begins with a statement of opinion or position supported by arguments given in detail, followed by further explanation or counter-arguments, and finally concludes with a conclusion that reinforces the initial position.


Tone and Style:

Hortatory Text: Tends to use persuasive language and calls to action.

Argumentative Texts: More focused on presenting logical arguments and strong evidence, often using a more formal language style.


Examples of Text Types:

Hortatory Text: Opinion editorials, advertisements, persuasive speeches.

Argumentative Texts: Argumentative essays, opinion articles, formal debates.

Although they have different purposes, sometimes hortatory texts and argumentation texts can have overlap in structure and content, especially when the argument in an argumentation text is also accompanied by a call or suggestion to action.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, environmental cleanliness has become an increasingly worrying issue. Every day we see garbage scattered around us, polluted rivers, and air that feels increasingly unhealthy to breathe.

Of course, we cannot turn a blind eye to this condition. Environmental cleanliness is our shared responsibility. We cannot keep blaming others or waiting for the government to act. It's time for all of us to act!

There are several reasons why we need to pay attention to environmental cleanliness. First of all, a clean environment has a positive impact on our health. Clean air reduces the risk of respiratory diseases, while clean water prevents the spread of waterborne diseases.

In addition, environmental cleanliness also has an impact on the preservation of nature. The more waste we litter, the more damage we cause to the ecosystem. We don't want our children and grandchildren to live on an earth that is not as beautiful and healthy as the one we enjoy today, do we?

This government-funded school has a front yard, namely a basketball court which can also be used as a futsal court. Even though it has been used as land for sports, there is a policy where some of the land that is not covered by the field area is used as parking for teachers' vehicles. The sports area which is crowded with parking lots and school rubbish dumps creates an unpleasant feeling in the heart, because the unpleasant smell from the dump and the lack of freedom to exercise because there are teachers' vehicles makes field users wary.
